Food Porn Preview of Epcot 2012 International Food and Wine Festival

Time for food porn! Put down that tattered copy of 50 Shades of Gray and get on over here for the good stuff. Today we’re taking a look at some of the sultry and seductive offerings coming to us at Epcot’s 2012 International Food and Wine Festival this fall.

Why not start with something big and beefy? Le Cellie’s popular wild mushroom beef filet mignon with truffle butter sauce is paired with the perfect syrah from the Canada marketplace. For those who might have to work their way up to the real thing, this year’s new Terra booth will be offering meatless options like the Gardein Beefless Tips.

The Gardein Beefless Tips offer a savory kick and were created for vegans but will be appreciated by meat lovers too. The savory tips offered in a new Chili Colorado dish with house-made chips and cashew cheese dreamed up by the discerning palates of Disney chefs.

Hard at work in the kitchen with their big utensils, Epcot Executive Chef Jens Dahlmann (left) and Chef de Cuisine Gregg Hannon have worked with dozens of Disney chefs to create new dishes for international marketplaces that surround the World Showcase Lagoon during the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival.

Now if you can’t stand heat in the kitchen, perhaps you need to cool down with an icy cold drink. We recommend the sultry delight of an Italian margarita served by a fresh-faced young international program member fresh off the old continent. He’ll be trying to learn about the American way of life and you’ll be trying to learn just what’s in the water over there.

What’s in an Italian margarita? Who cares! You can have it here, there, anywhere! Look, there’s even another photo to pretend you’re playfully chasing the college program boy down the arcade to get your fill!

When you’re done running laps around the Italy pavilion, perhaps it’s time to kick back and relax at the more relaxed Florida kiosk and give shrimping a try. Never heard of shrimping? Google it, can’t hurt, right? Or you could just look at our lovely photo of this mouth-watering Shrimp Ceviche which debuts with fresh flavor and flair this year with the Florida Local marketplace.

Now how about dessert: Three new standout sweet tastes are on the menu at the Desserts & Champagne marketplace. From left to right: Dark chocolate mousse with chili and salted caramel; yogurt panna cotta with orange cake, raspberries and pomegranate; and lemon custard verrine with blueberry compote. Our mouths are watering at the prospect.

Simply delicious. And who is the mastermind behind all this? The mistress lining up the vixen to taunt and tease us each year? None other than Marianne Hunnel. Formerly a Walt Disney World Resort chef, she oversees content development for the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Hunnel’s responsibilities include booking guest chefs, Master Sommeliers, authors, wineries, marketplace kiosk sponsors, and Disney chefs participating in the festival – along with making sure we spend every moment leading up to it wishing it were sooner by providing plenty of food porn. Savvy mistress she be.

Major Changes Coming to Studio Tram Tour at Disney Hollywood Studios in 2013

Disney filed permits today to get the ball rolling on work to revamped the much maligned Studio Tram Tour at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. The attraction has sagged in attendance recently as it has been systematically reduced over the years from a half-day multi-part attraction to a mere shell of its former offerings that few guests are interested in seeing anymore.

The paperwork notes that these initial projects that focus on the queue and tram loading areas should be complete by the middle of 2013. There are additional permits that focus of the re-purposing and revamping of the Studios security offices to reconfigure the general area for future expansion possibilities as well.

New Cars Land Attractions Offer Accessibility to Guests with Disabilities

Each new Cars Land attraction offers a transfer option for guests in wheelchairs or electric convenience vehicles. Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree includes two, specially designed ride vehicles with side doors that open for transfers, and Luigi’s Flying Tires features an alternate loading area with an accessible ramp.

The flagship attraction in Cars Land, Radiator Springs Racers, has an alternate, accessible loading area separate from the main track, and a second, accessible location for viewing attraction photos. Guests with mobility disabilities now have access to more than 30 attractions in Disney California Adventure park. 2012 Canoe Races of the World Keep Disney Park Tradition Alive

Olympians or not, more than 800 Cast Members on 75 teams paddled their hearts out in the recent Canoe Races of the World event–commonly referred to as C.R.O.W–in Magic Kingdom.

Surrounding Tom Sawyer’s Island on the Rivers of America, the racers started near Country Bears Jamboree, passing by Big Thunder Mountain and Haunted Mansion,  rounding the corner near Liberty Square’s Riverboat to the finish line.

The annual two-week event began at Walt Disney World in 1973 after the tradition was started in Disneyland in 1963. C.R.O.W. is the only Cast event with similar races held in Disney Parks around the globe.

“Tradition is very important to our company”, said Paige McCalmon, events and operations delivery manager at Walt Disney World. “It is a great team and camaraderie builder, and it is uniquely Disney.”

To be a crew, eight to 10 people must be on the roster.  Generally, the team name is derived from work location or area of expertise.

The Grand Champion of C.R.O.W. 2012 was the Industrial Engineering Oars 3 team which took home the coveted title and bragging rights for the coming year.

The Spirit Award was given to the “Tough Cookies” team for showing tremendous support for their fellow competitors and cheering them on from start to finish.

Prior to the final race on July 20th, all teams were allowed two practice heats and a chance to attend a steering clinic.

Super Greeters Enhance the Experience for Brazilian Guests of Disney World

With the international tour group season in full swing, Walt Disney World Resort is on pace to exceed last year’s record for guest visitation from Brazil.

A big part of the success with international tour groups from Latin America  – and Brazil in particular – has been the 80 “Super Greeters” stationed throughout Walt Disney World Resort this summer.  The program continues to grow since it began, up from about 30 Super Greeters in 2009.

This year’s Super Greeters from Brazil are mostly alumni of the Walt Disney World Resort International College Program who were already well-trained in delivering an exceptional guest experience. All of them are fluent in Portuguese and many also speak Spanish.

As cultural representatives, Super Greeters assist international tour groups in their common language with tips for visiting Disney Parks and Resorts and engage in conversation to share their culture with guests from all over the world. Besides delivering an amazing guest experience that leads to tour groups coming back to Walt Disney World Resort, Super Greeters” help deliver record-breaking business results.

“Brazil is a very important market to us and over the past few years we’ve seen an opportunity to grow our business and visitation to Central Florida through our legendary guest service,” said Dan Cockerell, vice president of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. ”The innovative approach we take to welcoming guests with ‘Super Greeters’ from Latin America plays an important part in making our Guests from Brazil feel welcome in our region when they visit. This summer we expect to set another record in the number of Brazilian guests visiting Central Florida.”

Cast Members serving as Super Greeters assist international tour groups and share facts about their culture with guests at all four of theme parks, both water parks, Downtown Disney, and several resort hotels, including Disney’s All-Star Resort, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort, and Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.

Imagineering Files Permits for Adventureland Interactive Adventure Installation

There’s not a lot of details, but Imagineering has filed the first paperwork for what’s going to be an interactive experience in Adventureland at the Magic Kingdom theme park themed to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The paperwork refers to the project simply as “PIRIM” (Pirates Interactive something something… Media?) and refers to the Audio-visual and Show Control component installation locations.

The new items will be installed at and around the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction itself as well as other locations dotted around Adventureland. The paperwork covers 5 major install sites.

Kevin Kee recently posted rumors that the game would include the following elements:

  • Touching a skull activates the movement of the mouth of a talking tiki idol, which will reveal a jewel in his mouth.
  • Touching a blunderbuss activates the movement of sails that cover a bird cage, the sails will open to reveal an animated parrot.
  • Touching the fuse of a cannon activates an air cannon in the water as well as a light and smoke effect.
  • Touching a piece of parchment activates a skeleton captain emerging from the water.
  • Touching a snake charmers basket activates a spitting snake.
  • Touching a vase activates an image on a nearby tapestry.
  • Touching a shark tooth activates circling shark fins in the water
  • Touching a sand dollar activates a mechanical giant clam
  • Touching the carvings on a shelf will activate cannon blasts on ships in a bottle causing one ship to sink

Magic Kingdom Adding FASTPASS to Six Existing Attractions

UPDATED: Address list updated to include identification of Haunted Mansion and “it’s a small world.”

The Walt Disney World resort has filed permits to add Fastpass signage to six existing attractions at the Magic Kingdom theme park. The permits only refer to the attractions by their addresses within the park, so deciphering exactly which attractions are getting the system is a bit difficult, at the same time we can rule out the new New Fantasyland additions as we know their addresses to compare.

The list includes Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion “it’s a small world” and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin. The two remaining “unknown” attractions are located at 1220 and 1305B Monorail Way.

First Look and Photos: Cast Members Perform 10th Encore Show For Charity

In 2002, a few Walt Disney World Cast Members sharing a passion for artistic expression and a desire to help local charities came together to create magic in a special way — producing cabaret-style productions of Broadway standards.

Today, this group of Cast Members, aptly named Encore! Cast Performing Arts, has morphed into one of the largest Cast clubs, boasting more than 500 performers from a variety of backgrounds and from all areas of the Walt Disney World Resort. In addition, more than 50,000 volunteer hours are spent annually to prepare for an Encore! production.

Cast Members from diverse backgrounds and work areas participate in Encore!’s productions.

To kick off its 10th anniversary, the group has geared up to deliver its grandest production to date, “Finding Wonderland.” This story follows the journey of self-discovery as seen through one girl’s eyes. Along the way, she stumbles upon friends, foes, triumphs and defeats as she finds a way to the place she always dreamed of.

“‘Finding Wonderland’ takes a fresh take on many of our [productions] from the past 10 years,” said Clay Price, 15-year Cast Member and artistic director for Encore! Cast Performing Arts. “Most importantly, this show has heart. It is going to be emotional and energetic. ‘Finding Wonderland’ has a message that we all can relate to.”

Some show participants find that being a part of Encore!’s annual performance is the only chance they have to express themselves artistically on stage. Whether they are from Finance and Accounting, Merchandise or Food & Beverage, each volunteer plays an integral role in the show.

“What I love most about Encore! is that it gives us a time where both Entertainment and non-Entertainment Cast Members can perform together,” said Kenny Cottrell, a tenor in the choir and a Front Desk Cast Member at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resort.

For Hannah Laird, who performs in various shows throughout the Walt Disney World Resort, volunteering time to perform in Encore! is her passion.

“We are all here because we want to be here,” she said. “Encore! started out as a dream, and it is exciting to see this dream unfold for the tenth anniversary. And, this production is for a wonderful cause.”

Hannah Laird performs in “Finding Nemo – The Musical” and has been a part of Encore! for four years.

All proceeds from “Finding Wonderland” will be donated to A Better Life – Pet Rescue, an organization founded by Disney Cast Members that helps to promote pet adoption in Central Florida. A Better Life’s mission is to save all unwanted companion animals and to give them a second chance through rehabilitation.

“That this performance is a way that we can give back to our community as Disney Cast Members is amazing,” said Kristin Hunt, an eight-year Encore! veteran and a Guest Service manager at the Emporium at Magic Kingdom Park. “The community involvement aspect is a huge part of why I continue to play [the violin], and it drives my passion for being included in Encore!’s performances.”

“Finding Wonderland” is not solely aimed to dazzle audiences with music, acting and dancing, but it is to also remind all Cast Members of our Disney heritage.

“We can all have these grand ideas, but it takes people to get it done,” said Bruce Light, producer for the group. “Aside from having great music and a great story, these Cast Members are volunteering their time, and they have set the bar at excellent. Why not save the animals along the way?”

“Finding Wonderland” performances will be held July 15-16 and July 19-22 at 7:30 p.m. at Premier Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. To purchase tickets, visit www.encorecentral.org.
