Congress Questions Disney’s MagicBand and MyMagic+ Over Privacy Concerns

As part of the The Congressional Privacy Caucus, Representative Markey (D- Mass.) has sent a letter to Bob Iger, CEO of the Disney corporation to ask several pointed questions about privacy concerns relating to the new MagicBand and MyMagic+ systems. Disney had intended to begin rolling out these systems in the coming months – rumors say as early as February for select resort locations – and was gaining publicity for the innovative data collection and park experience customization systems in the media, in particular the New York Times.

The New York Times articles is cited several times in the letter from Markey to Iger as a basis for the questions the caucus is asking. Technically the caucus is not a formal committee and has no subpoena power, but Disney is expected to respond with at least minimal answers to quell public worry over their systems.

The full letter, in PDF form, can be found here: http://markey.house.gov/sites/markey.house.gov/files/documents/Letter%20–%20Disney%20–%201-24-13.pdf

The Triumphant Return of the Snow Globe!

Snow Globes used to be one of the most popular vacation souvenirs at the Walt Disney World Resort. Then there was the TSA and the ban on liquids in carry-on luggage. This killed snow globe sales within Walt Disney World, though some guests do choose to either risk their snow globe being broken in checked luggage or have it shipped to their home at a somewhat costly markup.

Today, that changes!

TSA allows small snow globes in carry-on luggage when packed in a passenger’s plastic 3-1-1 bag: Snow globes that appear to contain less than 3.4 ounces (approximately tennis-ball size) will be permitted if the entire snow globe, including the base, is able to fit in the same one clear, plastic, quart-sized, re-sealable bag as a passenger’s other liquids.

Now it’s a matter or snow globe size. Those huge honking ones are not likely to be approved anytime soon, but this is a step in the right direction. No more snow globes in TSA trashcans at checkpoints and no more paying for shipping charges that often cost just as much as the snow globe itself.

We hear that Disney already clearing out shelf space on Main Street USA in preparation of the coming snow globe harvest over the holidays. And a side note – you can actually buy the snow globe of the castle pictured above from Amazon.

RFID Room Key Card Payment Rolls Out in December at Walt Disney World Resort

Over the course of the next month the Walt Disney World Resort will be installing “touch to pay” RFID readers at all of its merchandise and sales locations which accept the Disney Resort room key charge (except valet, laundry, and arcade locations in the resorts.)

Beginning in December a phased roll-out of the program will begin with select resorts having their guests create a pin-number at the time of check in. By the end of January all resorts are expected to be live on the program with touch-to-pay capabilities on all room key cards with charging privileges.

This is the first step in the RFID NextGen integration, which will be followed by conversion to the wristband system replacing room keys cards and ticket media in the coming months.

Splitsville Scheduled for December 7th Grand Opening but Pretending Not to Be

Just a quick note, Splitsville is Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World has been scheduled for a Grand Opening per a media event invite they sent out over a month ago. This isn’t our invite – someone else posted it on the internet a month ago:

We’ve been not posting this information thinking Disney or Splitsville would make the announcement soon. Instead they continued the charade with another Disney Parks Blog post saying that guest need to watch their blog for the announcement. We’re putting our foot down and calling BS. As you can plainly see the event is/was scheduled for December 7th, 2012. Why play games? Seriously?

Walt Disney World Helps Write Story of New Library

Walt Disney World donated $150,000 to the Osceola Board of County Commissioners for its public library project in Celebration, giving residents of West Osceola access to a greater number of books, computers and other public resources.

The library, already under construction and expected to open early next year, will feature a collection of resources double the size of what’s currently available at the West Osceola Library near Celebration. It will also include a children’s area, meeting space for groups, dedicated area for teenagers and three times as many public computers with wireless computer access.

“Disney offered a gift that will enrich Celebration and the surrounding communities for generations to come,” said David Barnett, library contract manager for Osceola County. “It is our hope that this library will be a wonderful place where the seeds of creative thought will be planted and nurtured for people of all ages, giving us a greater understanding of our yesterday, and enriching our hopes and ideas for tomorrow.”

The new 10,000-square-foot building is located near the intersection of Campus Street and Celebration Boulevard.

“At its root, Disney is a story-telling company. Most of the Disney movies our children and grandchildren love today were inspired by characters who were first brought to life in books,” said Betty Lowery, Walt Disney World manager of community relations who presented the donation. ”It’s natural that Disney supports the work of our public libraries.”

In 2006, the West Osceola branch of the library opened in a 2,000 square-foot storefront on Highway 192. Previous to that, residents of Celebration developed their own library in a space shared with the town’s elementary school and entirely staffed with local volunteers.

Super Greeters Enhance the Experience for Brazilian Guests of Disney World

With the international tour group season in full swing, Walt Disney World Resort is on pace to exceed last year’s record for guest visitation from Brazil.

A big part of the success with international tour groups from Latin America  – and Brazil in particular – has been the 80 “Super Greeters” stationed throughout Walt Disney World Resort this summer.  The program continues to grow since it began, up from about 30 Super Greeters in 2009.

This year’s Super Greeters from Brazil are mostly alumni of the Walt Disney World Resort International College Program who were already well-trained in delivering an exceptional guest experience. All of them are fluent in Portuguese and many also speak Spanish.

As cultural representatives, Super Greeters assist international tour groups in their common language with tips for visiting Disney Parks and Resorts and engage in conversation to share their culture with guests from all over the world. Besides delivering an amazing guest experience that leads to tour groups coming back to Walt Disney World Resort, Super Greeters” help deliver record-breaking business results.

“Brazil is a very important market to us and over the past few years we’ve seen an opportunity to grow our business and visitation to Central Florida through our legendary guest service,” said Dan Cockerell, vice president of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. ”The innovative approach we take to welcoming guests with ‘Super Greeters’ from Latin America plays an important part in making our Guests from Brazil feel welcome in our region when they visit. This summer we expect to set another record in the number of Brazilian guests visiting Central Florida.”

Cast Members serving as Super Greeters assist international tour groups and share facts about their culture with guests at all four of theme parks, both water parks, Downtown Disney, and several resort hotels, including Disney’s All-Star Resort, Disney’s Port Orleans Resort, and Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.

First Look and Photos: Cast Members Perform 10th Encore Show For Charity

In 2002, a few Walt Disney World Cast Members sharing a passion for artistic expression and a desire to help local charities came together to create magic in a special way — producing cabaret-style productions of Broadway standards.

Today, this group of Cast Members, aptly named Encore! Cast Performing Arts, has morphed into one of the largest Cast clubs, boasting more than 500 performers from a variety of backgrounds and from all areas of the Walt Disney World Resort. In addition, more than 50,000 volunteer hours are spent annually to prepare for an Encore! production.

Cast Members from diverse backgrounds and work areas participate in Encore!’s productions.

To kick off its 10th anniversary, the group has geared up to deliver its grandest production to date, “Finding Wonderland.” This story follows the journey of self-discovery as seen through one girl’s eyes. Along the way, she stumbles upon friends, foes, triumphs and defeats as she finds a way to the place she always dreamed of.

“‘Finding Wonderland’ takes a fresh take on many of our [productions] from the past 10 years,” said Clay Price, 15-year Cast Member and artistic director for Encore! Cast Performing Arts. “Most importantly, this show has heart. It is going to be emotional and energetic. ‘Finding Wonderland’ has a message that we all can relate to.”

Some show participants find that being a part of Encore!’s annual performance is the only chance they have to express themselves artistically on stage. Whether they are from Finance and Accounting, Merchandise or Food & Beverage, each volunteer plays an integral role in the show.

“What I love most about Encore! is that it gives us a time where both Entertainment and non-Entertainment Cast Members can perform together,” said Kenny Cottrell, a tenor in the choir and a Front Desk Cast Member at Disney’s Yacht & Beach Club Resort.

For Hannah Laird, who performs in various shows throughout the Walt Disney World Resort, volunteering time to perform in Encore! is her passion.

“We are all here because we want to be here,” she said. “Encore! started out as a dream, and it is exciting to see this dream unfold for the tenth anniversary. And, this production is for a wonderful cause.”

Hannah Laird performs in “Finding Nemo – The Musical” and has been a part of Encore! for four years.

All proceeds from “Finding Wonderland” will be donated to A Better Life – Pet Rescue, an organization founded by Disney Cast Members that helps to promote pet adoption in Central Florida. A Better Life’s mission is to save all unwanted companion animals and to give them a second chance through rehabilitation.

“That this performance is a way that we can give back to our community as Disney Cast Members is amazing,” said Kristin Hunt, an eight-year Encore! veteran and a Guest Service manager at the Emporium at Magic Kingdom Park. “The community involvement aspect is a huge part of why I continue to play [the violin], and it drives my passion for being included in Encore!’s performances.”

“Finding Wonderland” is not solely aimed to dazzle audiences with music, acting and dancing, but it is to also remind all Cast Members of our Disney heritage.

“We can all have these grand ideas, but it takes people to get it done,” said Bruce Light, producer for the group. “Aside from having great music and a great story, these Cast Members are volunteering their time, and they have set the bar at excellent. Why not save the animals along the way?”

“Finding Wonderland” performances will be held July 15-16 and July 19-22 at 7:30 p.m. at Premier Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. To purchase tickets, visit www.encorecentral.org.

Characters in Flight Balloon Closed and Removed – Possibly Permanently

Just off the phone with Disney and no one there seems to know what’s happened or why – but the Characters in Flight Balloon at Downtown Disney closed until further notice for all future available calendar dates. It may not reopen.

There was an accident recently involving the same model and make of balloon from the same manufacturer and operator as the Characters in Flight balloon at Ocean Park in Hong Kong.  The same Aero30NG balloon was installed at Ocean Park, Disneyland Paris, and Walt Disney World. Logic would dictate that this incident would lead to inspections of the similarly installed ride systems, but has instead – according to guests live on the scene at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World – prompted the compete removal of the balloon itself from the location. So as of right now, there is no balloon at the location.

Additionally Disney has removed their page from their website for the attraction. It appears as a search result stub. But then is not available to be accessed further.

Otherwise, no one at Disney seems to have any further information on the situation at the moment. There are rumors of financial problems with the ride operator, Aerophile, and subsequently the attraction remaining closed permanently.

Art of Animation to Open with RFID Room Keys for Phase 1 NextGen

Disney has announced today that the Art of Animation Resort will be opening its wings in the following order:

Finding Nemo (Grand opening) – Opens May 31
Cars – Opens June 18
Lion King – Opens August 10
Little Mermaid – Opens September 15

And if this all isn’t good and well exciting enough – Ok, for most of us who has been to a Disney resort, it really isn’t – there’s now been hard hat tours of the resort site. These tours have revealed that the Art of Animation Resort is going to be the first to deploy the all-important RFID-embedded Room Keys.

What are those? Why are they important? Remember this?

That’s a wristband room key from the DizFanatic article back in August of 2011 that detailed in-depth the whole NextGen project. Disney essentially made a internal video about what “NextGen” was going to be and DizFantatic got their hands on a copy so the world found out what NextGen was – wristbands. The future was wristbands, in particular, wristband room keys.

Well, now we know it wasn’t hot air because we saw the turnstiles tested at Epcot in November of 2011. We even had little RFID chips stuck to our tickets!

RFID and the NextGen project really is going to mean a whole new way to experience the Walt Disney World Resort. Little by little Disney has been installing NextGen systems at existing attractions. The wristbands are just part of the new systems, allowing ticket-like access.

The bigger data-based back end of the system will allow a new version of FASTPASS to be introduced into the parks and that’s really what seems to be next down the pipeline. Disney has been modifying attraction queues  at a fevered pace since last fall. Most attractions should be ready for the system for an October 1st, 2012 roll-out per the paperwork Disney has filed.

Will the Art of Animation Resort guests be the first to experience the NextGen experience in the parks? That remains to be seen, but it seems likely at this point. The resort will have the technology in place and will be using it, it’s simply a matter of when the parks will be ready to flip the switch on their end.
